Shell scheme vs space only stands: which is right for you?

Two exhibitors book the same show, same hall, same audience. One pays £4,000 for a shell scheme booth and walks away with a pipeline. The other pays £25,000 for a custom stand and barely breaks even.

The stand type wasn’t the difference. The match between stand type and objective was.

You’ve probably already been quoted a floor space fee without anyone asking what you’re trying to achieve. This guide covers both options honestly: what each includes, what each costs, where each works, and how to make the right call for your business at this show, right now.

What is a shell scheme stand

A pre-built structure supplied by the organiser as part of your booking, typically including an aluminium frame, white foamex wall panels, a fascia board with your stand number and name, carpet, standard lighting, and at least one electrical socket. A blank canvas with the walls already up.

Shell scheme is the entry point for most exhibitors: cost-effective, straightforward to set up, and available at UK shows of every size. Your job is to dress it well and staff it properly.

What is a space only stand

Exactly what it sounds like. You book a marked-out plot of floor and receive nothing else, no walls, no flooring, no lighting, no services. Everything that goes into that space, structure, branding, lighting, furniture, power, flooring, is yours to design, source and install. That’s the constraint. It’s also the opportunity.

A space only plot can accommodate almost any design the venue’s regulations allow: architectural structures, multi-zone environments, lounge spaces, suspended signage. The blank canvas costs more to fill, but what you can build with it is categorically different from what’s possible within a shell scheme frame.

The right choice isn’t always the more impressive one, and it’s rarely the cheaper one by default. It’s the one that matches your show, your objectives, and your timeline.

Configuration & what it means for your decision

Both stand types come in different configurations depending on where your plot sits in the hall: row or inline (one open side, the most common and budget-friendly), corner (two open sides, better visibility), peninsula (three open sides, room for complex layouts), and island (four open sides, maximum exposure).

For shell scheme, configuration affects footfall and dressing strategy but not the fundamental structure. For space only, it affects the entire design brief. A peninsula or island plot has three or four sides on show from the moment the hall fills, and a design that only considers one of them wastes the position it paid for. Corner and peninsula cost more than row at both stand types, and pull more visitors. Island commands the highest premium and suits a brand that wants a flagship presence, not just a presence.

How the costs compare

Shell scheme. Space typically runs £220 to £625 per square metre from the organiser, so a standard 3x3m booth lands around £4,000 to £6,000 for the space itself. Add customisation, graphics, lighting, furniture, and an all-in package from a stand builder typically runs £3,000 to £5,000 on top. Total for a well-presented 3x3m booth: £5,000 to £10,000.

Space only. Floor space starts at £300 to £350 per square metre and can exceed £600 at high-demand events, so a 9m² plot alone costs £2,700 to £3,150 before a panel goes up. The build comes on top: small stands at 9-12m² from £5,000 to £7,000, medium builds around 16m² from £15,000 to £20,000, larger builds considerably higher. Modular hire sits between £9,000 and £13,000, a middle ground between full custom and a dressed shell scheme. Total for a mid-size space only stand at a national show: £20,000 to £35,000+.

The cost comparison only tells part of the story. A £25,000 stand used across four shows costs £6,250 per event. The same shell scheme booth dressed well costs less upfront but doesn’t build the same brand equity in the room. What matters is the return each option generates at that specific show.

Design & creative control

Shell scheme has fixed walls, a maximum height around 2.5m, and a standard layout. You can customise within that frame with graphics, lighting, screens and furniture. Done well it looks professional and generates solid results, done poorly it looks like every other stand in the hall. You cannot break out of the frame, hang things from above, or build features that rise above the fascia.

Space only removes those constraints. Height limits rise to 4m or 6m with approval, you can create multiple zones, suspend signage, build curved walls or a double-deck structure for meetings or hospitality. That freedom comes with a weight attached: more decisions, more coordination, structural engineering documentation for larger builds, rigging approvals, and compliance sign-off from the venue. None of it is difficult with the right contractor. All of it is stressful without one.

Setup, planning & lead times

Shell scheme is relatively quick, the organiser provides the framework and you bring graphics, furniture and finishing elements. Give a stand builder at least 8 weeks.

Space only needs considerably more planning: arranging utilities independently, confirming compliance, submitting structural drawings for larger builds, and coordinating installation with the venue. Read the exhibitor manual before you brief your builder, not after, a design that hasn’t been checked against venue rules early enough risks modification or rejection on build day. Contact a builder at least 12 weeks out, and 16 weeks for larger or more complex builds. Missing deadlines on a space only build doesn’t just create stress, it creates costs.

Where each option works best

Choose shell scheme when: you’re exhibiting for the first time and want to learn what works before a larger build, you’re testing a new show without overcommitting budget, your timeline is under 12 weeks, the show is regional or mid-size, and your objectives are lead generation and brand awareness at a defined cost. Our LITE package is the route here, an all-in shell scheme hire covering branded graphic panels, counter, screen and lighting at one fixed price.

Choose space only when: you’re exhibiting at a flagship show where stand presence is part of the brand story, you have the budget and a clear brief ready, you want a distinct environment with multiple zones or hospitality, and your timeline allows at least 12 weeks. READY gives you custom quality with hire simplicity, or a full custom build if you’re starting from scratch.

If you’re starting out or working to a defined budget, go shell scheme. If you’re ready to make a genuine statement at an event you know delivers, go space only.

Questions to answer honestly before you decide

  • How many shows are you planning this year, and could a reusable stand work across more than one?
  • What’s your total budget, including floor space fee, build, and logistics?
  • What does success actually look like, leads, conversations, or brand presence?
  • Have you exhibited at this show before, and do you know which positions perform?
  • How much lead time do you genuinely have from today to build day?
  • Do you have a clear brief, or are you still working out what the stand needs to do?

A clear answer to all six makes the decision almost automatic. A vague answer to any one is a signal to slow down before committing to a floor space fee.

Sustainability across both options

Both stand types can be designed with sustainability in mind, and both require deliberate decisions to get there. A well-managed shell scheme, using reusable modular panels, recyclable graphics and hired furniture, produces very little waste, since the framework itself is returned to the organiser.

Custom space only builds carry a higher material cost upfront but earn it back across multiple events: reusable components reconfigure for different floor sizes, panels take fresh graphics for a new show, and FSC-certified timber and PVC-free graphics remove the two highest-impact materials from the waste stream entirely. At Rocket-X, both are standard on every build, not an optional upgrade.

How Rocket-X approaches both

We design and build both, and we’ll tell you honestly which one makes sense for your situation, including when the answer is the less expensive option. LITE is our all-in shell scheme hire package. READY bridges the gap between a dressed shell scheme and a full custom build. For brands ready to build from the ground up, we design and construct CUSTOM stands using PEFC and FSC-certified timber, PVC-free graphics, and 15 years of installation experience behind every decision.

Don’t leave this decision until it’s made for you

The longer you wait to confirm your stand type, the fewer options you have. Good positions fill early, and exhibition stand contractors with availability fill their diaries faster than most exhibitors expect.

Tell us about your next event. We’ll tell you honestly what makes sense, a shell scheme booth, a hire package, or a full custom build. One conversation, no jargon, no push toward the more expensive option if it isn’t the right one.

A shell scheme typically includes a pre-built modular frame, walls, flooring, and basic lighting supplied by the organiser. Space only gives you an empty floor area with nothing included. Shell scheme is quicker, cheaper, and simpler to set up. Space only offers complete creative control over exhibition stand design, height, structure, and layout.
Shell scheme is significantly cheaper. A well-presented 3x3m shell scheme booth typically costs £5,000 to £10,000 in total. A mid-size space only stand at a national show usually runs £20,000 to £35,000 or more, covering both the floor space fee and the custom exhibition stand build.
For a shell scheme, allow at least 8 weeks before your event if you're working with a stand builder. This gives time for design, print production, and logistics. For a space only stand, allow a minimum of 12 weeks, and 16 weeks for larger or more complex builds. Space only requires structural planning, compliance approvals, and utility coordination that take time to do properly.
Shell scheme is the better starting point for first-time exhibitors. It costs less, sets up faster, and lets you learn what works before committing to a larger custom exhibition stand build. A well-designed shell scheme booth with strong graphics, good lighting, and a prepared team consistently delivers solid results at the right shows.
Yes, and it's a common progression. Many exhibitors start with a shell scheme exhibition booth at a show, learn what their audience responds to, then move to a space only plot once they've confirmed the show delivers. Your exhibition stand contractor can design both with that upgrade path in mind, so the brand story carries through rather than starting again.

Let's build something worth remembering.
